[...] This is precisely why Vince Twelve’s “Anna” is such a breath of fresh air. “Anna” is a short and sweet adventure/puzzle game that features two characters, the eponymous Anna, a philosophical A.I., and Hero, her level-headed technician. The game opens with Hero beginning his daily inspection and maintenance of Anna’s hardware, accompanied by a bit of inquisitive banter on Anna’s part, which Hero responds to with patience and good humor. Yet, as the space station Anna controls is suddenly threatened, her train of thought reaches a paradox, and she shuts down. Given control of Hero, the player must attempt to repair Anna in time to salvage the desperate situation. [...]

[...] First up, Adventure Gamers added a great news post to their Underground section titled Vince Twelve sees strange things when his eyes are closed. From the article: Many adventure gamers are fond of complaining about how little innovation there is in recent games, how they are all built on a model from the early 90s and aren’t trying to move forwards. It seems safe to say that the people making those complaints haven’t played any games by Vince Twelve. Starting with Anna, his releases consistently combine oddball stories and fiendish logic puzzles with some truly unique presentations. [...]

[...] Going another step down, you find me… as well as hundreds of other hobbyists. We’re working with a budget of zero, a tiny team (in my case: one person), and little expertise or experience. For this reason, we often choose to opt for existing game engines. I use AGS because it’s easy, free, and remarkably flexible. However, these engines come with their own limitations. AGS doesn’t natively support 3D, but I don’t mind because my art team (me) is not so advanced in 3D. AGS also uses a slow art library and has a number of limitations that stem from that. When I made Anna, I had to think long and hard about workarounds for these limitations to get the effects I was aiming for. All of these limitations really add up for the game-making hobbyist. So why even try? [...]

[...] I’ve played all of the games and have finished all but three and I have to say, this is the highest quality OROW yet. It’s amazing what these individuals or small teams managed to accomplish in a week. Anna, which tied for the win of the second OROW, would not have stood a chance among some of these games.
