Spooks was originally released on Valentine’s Day this year as the second game from xii games. The game was designed and written entirely by Erin “The Ivy” Robinson, but she had no knowledge of coding to turn her idea into a reality. I saw the promise of a gem of a game in the art and descriptions that she posted online and knew that I wanted to be a part of that game. I offered my services to her, and a month and a half later, we had this little beauty.
From the designer, Erin:
“Spooks†is as close to the Land of the Dead that you can get with a pulse. In this immersive Sierra-style adventure, you play as Mortia, an adorably cynical little ghoul girl. The game starts with your average visit to the Carnage-Val, a theme park where the only thing more dysfunctional than the rides is the staff.
When a smooth-talking carnie convinces Mortia to play a game of darts, the last thing she expects to win is a live goldfish. Especially because there hasn’t been a living thing in the Land of the Dead for a very, very, very long time. Suddenly Mortia has to figure out how to save her little fish, who she calls “Spooks,†from a decidedly deadly end.
This game was originally designed by me, Erin “The Ivy†Robinson, for a MAGS competition on the AGS forums, but it quickly grew into a medium-length adventure. It features an impressive original soundtrack by Chris “The Scorposer†Moorson, and some crack scripting by Vince Twelve. This game was reviewed by Adventure Gamers, and has been praised as innovative, funny, and clever (and not just by me).
You can download Spooks from the offical page which you can access at any time from the groovy Flash navigation in the sidebar to the right.
